Troubleshooting search

Search might not return the results you expect because of the following:

  • The files you're looking for aren't in the cataloged folders.
  • Search only looks at a few attributes of the file, such as name, file type, and source. Specifically, it doesn't find files by their contents (e.g., text in a Microsoft Word doc).
  • In the case of photos, additional attributes are part of the catalog, such as location. If you search by location and can't find the file, it might be missing in the photo file itself.
  • The file is a "hidden" file, or it's in a hidden folder. By default, these files aren't displayed when you browse files in Microsoft Windows® File Explorer or macOS Finder.
  • You didn't grant permission to allow the software to access a cataloged folder.
    • On macOS, change the permissions by going to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Files and Folders.
Note: Some file types are cataloged and can be found using Search but they won't appear when browsing files in the software, such as binary files and HTML files.
